Movie May, Jump Cut June and Juxtaposition July

All work and no movies? Not for this girl. In the mist of an internship, I had no trouble finding time for popcorn popping, wine sipping and film watching this summer. New and old titles alike filled my soul with music, drama, love and curiosity. With a little help from my internship partner and new best friend Casey, I had no trouble re-entering into the world of classic film while also enjoying more contemporary titles. So, here I am, twenty-two films and one season of Weeds later, ready to talk about my movie madness!

Let us start off on a sweet note. I SCREAM YOU SCREAM WE ALL SCREAM FOR...Chocolate! Okay, so I know that it is TECHNICALLY ice cream, but hey, I am a sucker for dark chocolate so I think we can all agree that it is interchangeable here. The very first film to reside inside of my DVD player this summer was (take notes children) Chocolat. Per Casey's suggestion, this American/British film was a perfect first for the summer movie lineup. Have I mentioned that Johnny Depp plays the rebel/gypsy/love interest in the film? If you are a true believer in chocolate (and Johnny) changing the lives of many, then this is a must see for you! If not, you should honestly try a spoonful of Peanut Butter & Company's Dark Chocolate Dreams peanut butter and let me know if you change your mind.

Moving right along now. Clue. If you are a fan of humorous dialogue and mystery this film is definitely for you! The film keeps you on your toes the entire time and makes you wonder where on earth all of the dead bodies are coming from. Are these people in the same room as the murderer? Who IS the murderer anyway? WHY is this police officer so gullible? Needless to say, it is a good time. At the end, celebrate by playing a round of Clue, the board game! On a side note, I would like to say R.I.P to Eileen Brennan who played the famous Mrs. Peacock. (If any of you have seen the television show 7th Heaven, she was Mrs. Bink.) She passed away a few days ago at the age of 80.

Put on your thinking caps! Let's talk about the wonderful world of Netflix and their vast library of documentaries. I honestly believe that documentaries should be required in school. From the time a person is in kindergarten until they graduate from high school they should be watching at least one documentary per day. I bet people would retain so much more information if they were taught in an interesting, exciting way. Let's be honest, what do YOU remember from the thousands of days that you were in school? You crammed, took a test, and then let the information run free (to never return to your brain). But when you watch a documentary, it is like secret learning. You feel as though you are watching a movie, but you are actually being educated. So it's like Sesame Street for adults!!! Doesn't that sound like fun!? I thought so. Now that we know why documentaries are brilliant, if you are at all interested in how young people train for Irish dancing championships (or even if you are not, because I promise you will be amazed after watching this), I would suggest JIG. So prepare yourself for 99 minutes of pure fun! Think about an Irish spin off of Dance Moms, but with less screaming. Next on the get smart list is Beautiful is Embarrassing. Summed up in one sentence, I would call it "Wayne White is a fun adult living in an artist's dream world!" It was fun. I enjoyed learning about his life and career. If you are a Smashing Pumpkins or Pee Wee's Playhouse fan it is a MUST WATCH.

The next section is about my new obsession with Marilyn Monroe (Thank you Casey), so be prepared. It all started with Some Like It Hot. I watched it, loved it, it ended and I was hooked like a hungry bass in the river. What more can I say other than she is perfect? She is perfect. From there I went on to watch There's no Business Like Show Business, which was good but it was not a huge role for her. Also, I ended up watching Bus Stop, which I wouldn't particularly suggest unless you are ready to feel like you want to rip your hair out because Don Murray's character, Beauregard 'Bo' Decker, is so damn obnoxious throughout the entire film. With that, I went on to watch Marilyn in Manhattan, yes, another documentary. It was about Marilyn's life close to the time of her death.

At this point I am not even half way through my summer list so I am going to have to condense my thoughts a bit now. Maybe I will give making it into a small short story a whirl.

Once upon a time there lived a gentleman whose dream was to be an amazing director and fly airplanes at the same time (The Aviator). One day he walked into a house full of aspiring actresses (Stage Door) while wearing his fireman boots, (We <3 Huckabees), in search of his next big star. He left the house knowing that the woman starring in his debut film would be a great singer and quite funny (Funny Girl). After filming, this woman would then move to New York in hopes of winning over her true love (Hello Dolly). She went back to school and ended up having sexual relations with a professor (actually it was a high school teacher, but tomayto tomahto right? Daydream Nation - this movie actually wasn't bad). They fell in love and planned to get married. Before their wedding, the man went on an unexpected trip with his friends (The Hangover 3) and was almost killed. No big deal. At the same time the bridal party had a little party of their own (Bachelorette - this movie is hilarious, and on Netflix). The bachelorettes decided to do cocaine (Brick - if you are a Joseph Gordon-Levitt fan, he is the main character in this movie) the night before the wedding. They ended up moving into a house where an exorcism had taken place (The Conjuring). They were having such a horrible time living there that they let it become a complete dump and got a lot of cats (Grey Gardens). Eventually Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthday came to save the day (The Heat) because, duh, they are both HILARIOUS, and if you have to choose just one newly relased movie to watch in theaters this summer DEFINITELY see The Heat! Now go eat a cheese sandwich and enjoy the show!
